When it comes to digital signage, we can trust the Americans to go bigger and bolder! The numerous digital displays of Times Square in New York City are world famous for their size and innovative formats.

Times Square is a huge commercial intersection, with about 360,000 people passing through each day. It’s also a major tourist destination, with hundreds of concerts and other events held each year.

Therefore, it is no wonder that advertisers are willing to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for space on the huge electronic billboards that adorn the sides of the multistorey buildings.

The first digital screens were installed back in 1996, by Nissin Foods to advertise Cup Noodles (an American version of Pot Noodles). Since then, hundreds of well-known brands, such as Panasonic, Sony, General Motors, and Budweiser have all occupied advertising boards in the area.

The individual signs are owned and managed by various different companies. One of the most famous in the ABC Supersign, which is owned and operated by the US television network. It has distinctive waved LED ribbons, and a curved ticker which is shown on the network’s flagship Good Morning America show. It’s a favourite tourist destination too.

The American Eagle Outfitters have 25,000 sq feet of retail space in Times Square, and 15,000 sq feet of LED signage space over four storeys. This makes it one of the largest and most prominent digital advertising spaces in the world!

The Branded Cities Network own and manage some of the most iconic signs in Times Square, such as the Thomson Reuter sign and the Nasdaq Tower.

They work with companies to provide a ‘brandscaping’ service. This involves integrating static digital signs with temporary sign campaigns in parks, plazas, and other public spaces, which are fully integrated with social media and an online shopping experience.
