Digital signage is now the go-to method for displaying information or advertising in public spaces. There’s plenty to consider when designing the content for an LED screen, in order to get the message across clearly. You only have a couple of seconds to gain the attention of passers by, and the content needs to be easily understood.
Here are a few tips to make sure that your sign has maximum impact and holds the attention of an audience.
Research what works
It might seem unoriginal, but if something works, there is no reason to stray too far from a tried and tested formula. Of course, copying an existing design too closely is not recommended for many reasons, but it is fine to make general reference points about use of colour, scale, location, and so on.
Choose a few successful signs in a sector similar to your own, and identify what works well for them. Try and relate it to current trends as well, so that your finished design is both contemporary and drawing on good past examples.
Use words sparingly
As a rule, signs should contain no more than three lines of text, which contain five words as a maximum. Any more than that, and a viewer is likely to glance away. There is some flexibility in the rule; for example, you could use five lines of text, containing no more than three words each.
Graphics are secondary
Having said that words should be used with restraint, relying too heavily on graphics to get your message across will create confusion. Unless you are working with an instantly recognisable world famous logo, such as the Nike swoosh or the McDonald’s arches, the graphics should be used in the background, or to emphasise the text.
