A list of famous sights in Vienna might include the Gothic St Stephen’s Cathedral, the Hofburg Palace and the Prater Ferris Wheel, but a more contemporary feature has been added to the list – Europe’s largest LED display.
The display, known as the Number One screen, measures 51 by 20 metres and covers 1,020 sq m. It is mounted on a tall building on the southern outskirts of the city, overlooking the busiest road in Austria, AV Interactive reports.
This make it 30 per cent larger than the Piccadilly lights screen in London, which measures 784 sq m in size. The screen includes 1,400 cabinets of transparent LED modules. The structure contains seven ones of steel, 13 tonnes of LED modules and six km of cables.
Made and installed by Croatian firm Rineo Sign Factory, its location at the intersection of a motorway and a major national highway, as well as being adjacent to a Westfield Shopping Centre, is expected to generate 12 million views a month once it becomes operational in the coming weeks.
The Number One Screen website stated: “The use of high-intensity LEDs allows not only for optimal visibility during the day, but also for a brilliantly illuminated image in the dark.”
In addition, it notes, the screen is in the line of sight of drivers for nearly 2KM, due to “its ideal alignment”.
Number One CEO Michael MullerBaatz said: “Number One makes brands tangible in a highly frequented environment. Compelling messages are distributed effectively to reach the general public and boost the brands’ image in the long term.”
According to the Guinness World Records, the largest LED screen in the world is a 50 m x 30 m (7,500 sq ft) screen at The Place in Beijing, which was installed in 2009.
The display is, however, not one screen but five, placed in a line to project a single continuous image.
