Digital signage offers many advantages over traditional formats. It is bright, eye-catching, and easy to read from a distance. Programmable digital signage also has the huge advantage of being able to change the content at the touch of a button, meaning that the sign will always be up to date and relevant.

However, the placement of the digital signage is key to getting the best return on investment. Here are some important points to consider.

Location and audience

The first step is to identify who your target audience is, and when would be the most appropriate place to share your messages. Sometimes, this is obvious, such as in a waiting room or lobby. Other content might need more research. For example, if you are promoting sports equipment a location near a leisure centre or sports stadium may be ideal.

Measure footfall

When you have decided on an approximate location, the next step is to determine exactly which areas get the most traffic. Look for places where people tend to gather, such as bus stops, or a queue outside a popular coffee shop for example. If the sign is going to be placed indoors, study the layout and look at the way people interact with the space.

Consider height and distance

An optimum location still requires the sign to be clearly visible from a certain distance. Ideally it should be placed at eye level, with the content large enough to be read from a distance of around 20 ft.

Other considerations

As well as the basic points above, assess the overall surroundings. Are there any obstructions such as pillars or railings that will impede on the visibility of the sign? Are there already other signs nearby that will detract from your sign? The fewer distractions, the more attention your sign will get.
