Digital Menu Board

Digital menu boards are now widely used throughout the hospitality industry and are fast replacing the traditional static board. This is hardly surprising when they have so many advantages to offer.

They can be updated with the touch of a button, rather than a time consuming and expensive reprinting or rewriting process. This provides a better customer experience and is also obviously beneficial for business. The menu can be adapted to suit the weather, the time of day, and availability of certain ingredients or products.

However, it’s still important to put some thought into the design and layout of the menu to make it attractive and easy to read, and to draw attention to special offers and so on. Here are a few tips to help you design an effective digital menu board.

Research has shown that our eyes sweep from the top left to the bottom right of a screen, just as with a page or poster. Therefore put your most popular or best selling items near the top left corner.

Use high colour contrasts

The menu should be readable from 10 to 15 ft away, so make sure that the text stands out with high contrast. Use a clear sans serif typeface and test out the font size to ensure that it can easily be read from a distance.

Keep it uncluttered and consistent

Menus naturally contain a lot of information, but avoid the temptation to crowd as this will be confusing and difficult to read. When using photographs or images, keep them to a consistent size and style to pull the whole board together.

Use screen takeovers

For promotional items, programme then to take over the whole screen for a few seconds rather than crowd them into the main content.
