Digital signage technology has advanced considerably over the past few years, and the format is now an established part of the communications and advertising landscape. Here’s a look at some of the design and technology trends for LED display screens that we can expect to see evolving or emerging during 2024.

Holograms and 3D images

The technology is now in place for reproducing convincing 3D holographic images on digital display screens, and we can expect to see more of this during 2024. In a competitive area where it is increasingly difficult to stand out and command the attention of an audience, leading brands are likely to be investing more frequently in head-turning 3-D imagery.

Large format digital adverts

The Sphere in Las Vegas has thrown down the gauntlet for new standards in scale of the digital advertising format. It is a large domed building that is entirely covered in double-sided LED screens, maximising visibly and offering an immersive indoor experience.

Although planning permission for a similar structure was recently turned down in London, expect to see other large-format building screens appearing worldwide in 2024 and beyond.

Digital screens as omnichannel advertising

As out of home advertising becomes increasingly aligned with digital methods, it may become more commonplace to see LED screens as part of an omnichannel shopping experience.

This is a method of offering the customer a consistent and streamlined brand experience, no matter whether they are shopping online, in-store, on a mobile device, or via social media. This ensures that the consumer will always see consistent products and pricing across their entire shopping journey, and are less likely to encounter disruptions.

This reduces the bounce rate, making it less likely that customers will look elsewhere if they become frustrated on their buying journey. It also increases the opportunity for cross-selling related relevant items to the customer, or upselling a more advanced product. It also makes future purchases easier and enhances the customer experience through personalization.

Bold minimalism

In terms of purely design-led trends, bold minimalism is likely to set the tone over the next year. This takes the classic minimalist format of plenty of whitespace and simple but elegant visuals, and introduces bold and eye-catching elements. This might include strong contrast or tone and colour within a restrained layout, for example.

It might also include oversized typography or other unexpected uses of scale to capture the attention. This can help to increase dwell time and improve readability.

Nostalgia

In a fast-paced technological environment, there is also a growing trend for nostalgic design schemes. Retro graphics from the 70s and 80s are becoming increasingly popular, and designers are using deliberately aged textures, classic serif fonts, and retro colour choices.
